Anorexia Nervosa
What is anorexia nervosa?

Anorexia nervosa is marked by extreme food restriction. It involves intense fear of gaining weight, as well as disordered and obsessive thinking patterns around food. All size bodies can develop anorexia.
Healing from Anorexia is hard but it is possible!!! Learning to silence that voice in your head and embrace healing is challenging and brave. YOU ARE BRAVE!!
Remember that sometimes healing hurts before it gets better, and we promise it is worth the fight. Anorexia can often feel isolating but you don’t have to do it alone. There is no timeline and you can’t fail at recovery as long as you try!
The DSM identifies two subtypes of anorexia:
-
Restricting Type: This type is the most common of the two. A person will lose weight by eating very little food. They may exercise a lot to burn off what few calories they have eaten.
-
Binge-eating/Purging Type: A person with this type may also restrict their diet. Yet they will also experience periods of binge eating and purging. Some people struggling with this diagnosis may also use laxatives or diuretics in some capacity.
*Please note due to the toxicity of our culture, at times some of these behaviors can go overlooked. All behaviors listed above are serious and deserving of help. You are not alone!

The term “atypical anorexia” is sometimes used for individuals who meet all the criteria for anorexia but are in a larger body. However, this term is stigmatizing and unnecessary—all individuals with anorexia, regardless of size, deserve treatment and support.
