How Faith Plays a Role in Recovery

Faith provides a foundation of hope and resilience in the face of life’s challenges, including eating disorders. At Recovered and Restored, we believe that understanding who we are in Christ can transform how we view our bodies and approach recovery. Psalm 139:14 reminds us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” a powerful truth that combats the lies often tied to body image struggles.

Through prayer, scripture, and spiritual encouragement, our team helps clients reconnect with their faith and explore how God’s love can empower them in their recovery. “When we invite God into our healing process, we unlock a deeper level of transformation,” shares Gabby Morreale, our Clinical Director. Whether it’s reflecting on God’s intentional design in Genesis or finding comfort in Christ’s compassion, faith becomes an integral part of the recovery journey.

1. Your Body Is Not the Problem

It’s easy to feel frustration or even resentment toward your body during recovery, especially when life’s challenges feel overwhelming. However, blaming your body is not the solution, and turning to eating disorder behaviors will not fix your circumstances. Instead, it’s essential to shift your perspective and remember an important biblical truth: God made your body very good.

In Genesis 1:27 and 31, we see that God created humanity in His image and declared it “very good.” Even though our bodies are subjected to the challenges and imperfections of a fallen world (Romans 8:20), they remain wonderfully made and worthy of care and respect. When difficult circumstances arise, it’s vital to resist the temptation to blame your body or use disordered behaviors as a way to cope. These actions can create deeper harm and lead you further from healing.

Instead, consider viewing your body as a gift from God - one that sustains you, moves you, and allows you to live out His purpose. By focusing on gratitude for what your body does for you and leaning into God’s truth, you can begin to repair the narrative you’ve created about your physical self. Recovery involves showing your body the same grace and compassion that God offers you through his son Jesus. As you do this, healing becomes a journey that aligns with His plan for your life.

In moments of struggle, turn to prayer, lean into scripture, and remind yourself of this truth: Your body is not your enemy. It is a reflection of God’s creation and a vessel for His glory.

2. Seek Support from Your People

In Christian eating disorder therapy, one of the most profound truths we often revisit is this: we were not created to face life’s hardest moments in isolation. From the very beginning, God designed us for connection and community. Genesis 2:18 reminds us, "It is not good for man to be alone." Similarly, Proverbs 18:1 warns against the dangers of isolating ourselves during difficult times. Recovery from an eating disorder is no exception.

Building a supportive community is essential on your recovery journey. Whether it’s leaning on friends, family, or your treatment team, surrounding yourself with people who care for you provides strength and encouragement. One of the most healing things you can do is to simply be with others. Share a meal, watch a comforting movie, take a walk together, or spend time doing something that brings joy. Even something as simple as snuggling a friend’s baby while they take a much-needed break. It’s in these shared moments that healing begins to unfold.

For those navigating the challenges of recovery, it’s vital to remember that you’re not alone. Call on your people. Share your struggles. And if someone you know is in the midst of suffering, don’t wait for them to ask for help - reach out. Even small gestures of support can make a world of difference, offering hope and reassurance during a time when it’s needed most.

Through Christian eating disorder therapy, we emphasize the importance of finding beauty in connection and seeking out the blessings that exist outside of our struggles. Remember, you are never alone in your journey - God’s love and the love of others can sustain you every step of the way.

3. Seek God in Your Recovery

One of the foundational principles of Christian eating disorder therapy is to seek God wholeheartedly, knowing that He promises to be found by those who seek Him with all their heart. In moments of struggle, turning to God in prayer allows us to draw closer to Him and find the strength we need to continue on the path to recovery. Jesus reminds us in Luke 11:9 to seek, ask, and knock - assuring us that when we do, He will respond.

Even when you don’t know what to pray, take comfort in knowing that the Spirit intercedes on your behalf. â€‹â€‹

Praying scripture is a powerful way to align your heart with God’s truth during difficult circumstances. Whether you’re clinging to promises like Romans 8:31, which reminds us that God is for us, or meditating on His intimate knowledge of you as described in Psalm 139, scripture becomes a source of encouragement and guidance in your recovery journey.
In Christian eating disorder therapy, we help you center your healing on God’s presence and promises. Remember, He sees you, knows your pain, and offers His comfort freely. Seeking God in prayer and scripture not only provides spiritual grounding but also serves as a vital step toward finding peace and wholeness, no matter what challenges you face.
