Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eating Disorders
CBT is a structured treatment approach used to help one understand the interaction between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. As you begin your journey with CBT, you will set goals with your therapist and spend sessions reviewing homework, case formulation, teaching skills, and problem-solving. This treatment is considered the most effective therapy for the treatment of bulimia nervosa.
CBT Session Components include:
-
Challenge dietary rules

-
Exposure to fear foods

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) and Eating Disorders
Did you know according to the International OCD Foundation, 69% of people with eating disorders also experience symptoms of OCD, whereas 41% are diagnosed with both OCD and an eating disorder?
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is an evidence-based best practice. ERP is the gold standard when treating OCD. ERP is a type of therapy that exposes you to your fears in a safe and controlled way with the goal of increasing anxiety to help you learn how to tolerate the anxiety without using rituals, avoidance, or compulsions.
ERP can assist clients with eating disorders to challenge their fear of foods, break their obsession with the scale, interrupt their obsessive thought patterns around food and their body and so much more.
Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Eating Disorders
Acceptance and commitment therapy is a type of mindful psychotherapy that helps clients stay focused on the present moment and accept thoughts and feelings using a non-judgemental stance. It incorporates commitment and behavior-change strategies to increase psychological flexibility. Below are some benefits of ACT therapy in eating disorder work as well come core values of ACT.
