Is Online therapy effective?
For those who are more familiar with traditional, in-person therapy, you might ask whether online therapy can be as effective.
One of the first things to consider is how online therapy is a wonderful option when meeting in person just isn’t possible, as we saw in 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic. Sometimes circumstances just don’t allow for in-person, and therefore online therapy sessions are necessary to support an individual’s mental health.
Research Supports the Effectiveness of Online Therapy
A scholarly article published in Acta Informatica Medica in December 2017 discussed a systematic review of telemental healthcare. The authors reviewed 156 articles that contained keywords pertaining to telemental health, of which 25 met the criteria for the systematic review. Their conclusion was:
“Telemental health care can provide effective and adaptable solutions to the care of mental illnesses universally. While being comparable to in-person services, telemental health care is particularly advantageous and inexpensive through the use of current technologies and adaptable designs, especially in isolated communities.”
Another research paper in EClinicalMedicine, published by The Lancet, in 2020, reviewed the effects of electronically delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (eCBT) with those of face-to-face CBT by a systematic review. The authors' conclusion was the eCBT was at least as effective as in-person CBT.
How does online therapy work?
If you’re familiar with Zoom or Facetime, then you’ve got a good idea of what online therapy would be like! At Recovered and Restored Eating Disorder Therapy Center, we use a HIPAA-compliant video chat service to meet with our clients. This means that we can see you and you can see us as we chat. This virtual face-to-face interaction really helps to create the personal connection necessary for therapy.
After speaking with our team and scheduling your online therapy session, you’ll receive the information for how to log in to the session when the time comes.
